Sikh Federation (UK) Set Out 5-Point Plan For General Election on 8 June 2017

London (Press Release): The key issue we have been addressing since the General Election was officially announced on 19 April is to try and secure winnable seats with the two main parties for Sikh candidates. This is work in progress, but things will become clearer in the next few days and the battle will then begin to see if any of the Sikhs can be elected as MPs on 8 June.

We have already started to encourage all Sikhs able to vote to register by 22 May 2017 and during the General Election 2017 we will encourage Sikh voters, Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations to focus on the following five point plan:

5-POINT PLAN FOR GE2017

1. Better representation of Sikhs in Parliament (Section 1 of the Sikh Manifesto)
2. Official recognition of the 1984 Sikh Genocide (Linked to Section 9 of the Sikh Manifesto)
3. Independent public inquiry into UK Government support for the Indian authorities in the lead up to and after the 1984 Sikh Genocide (Section 8 of the Sikh Manifesto)
4. A full apology from the British Prime Minister for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre before the 100th anniversary in 2019
5. Getting the British authorities to recognise their failings 70 years ago with regards to Sikhs and their homeland in 1947 and the death, destruction and devastation of Partition. It was the largest mass migration in human history of some 10 million. One million civilians died in the accompanying violence as Punjab (the Sikh homeland) was cut in two by the border to create the Muslim majority (Pakistan) and the Hindu majority (India). (Linked to Section 10 of the Sikh Manifesto)

Some issues in the Sikh Manifesto that are in hand, such as separate ethnic monitoring of Sikhs, a site in central London for a monument to recognise Sikh sacrifices in the First World War and more Sikh ethos schools can also be discussed with candidates.

KTV on Sky 858 in its regular Politics Matters programmes will follow the fortunes of leading Sikh candidates and provide feedback on where candidates for MP and political parties stand on the above issues.

Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) said:

“We are confident that we will see two or three Sikh MPs elected on the 8 June. All Sikhs able to vote must register and cast their vote to make every Sikh vote count.”

“The Sikh Manifesto for 2015-2020 produced by the Sikh Network is still an invaluable reference document. The 5-point plan for GE2017 complements the Sikh Manifesto and directs Sikh voters, Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations to issues they can raise with candidates of all political parties.”
