Expectations High of Two Sikh MPs in British Parliament: Sikh Federation UK

London: The two newly elected Sikh MPs started work on June 12, although Parliament officially opens next Monday.

Preet Kaur Gill being the first female Sikh MP and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi being the first turban wearing Sikh MP have captured the imagination and had a huge amount of publicity on social and mainstream media in the last few days following the General Election.

They are now probably the best know of the incoming MPs. The Labour leadership have seen the benefits of these two firsts and the Conservatives are probably regretting not having given the same opportunity to visible and talented Sikhs on their approved lists in winnable seats. Next time round the Conservatives will no doubt learn from Labour as far as the Sikh community is concerned with regards to representation and its manifesto compared to Labour.

Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) said: “There are high expectations of Preet and Tanmanjeet.”

“First and foremost they need to serve their constituents and strengthen the Labour Party as there could easily be another General Election within 6 months.”

“The Sikh community in the UK and beyond will also be closely observing their achievements. They have so much to offer and we are convinced they will make the Sikh community proud.”
