Police Probing Gangsters’ Role in Killing of Hindu Sangharsh Sena Leader in Amritsar

Amritsar/Chandigarh: The police is reportedly working on multiple theories to crack the case related to killing of a local leader of a Hindu outfit in Amritsar. Reports in media say that the police is suspecting gangsters’ role behind the killing and two suspects have been rounded up by the city police for interrogation. Notably, Vipin Sharma, a local leader of Hindu Sangharsh Sena was shot dead in Amritsar on Monday (Oct. 30).

A report in Hindustan Times (HT) notes that The police suspect the involvement of two local gangsters.

HT quotes a police officer, whose identity was withheld by the newspaper to fulfil the condition of anonymity, saying that: “One of them belongs to Sultanwind area in Amritsar and is wanted in several criminal cases. The other one is from Chabal village in Tarn Taran. We are looking for them”.

The Indian Express (IE) reports that the police said they suspect the role of gangsters, including one Saraj Singh alias Mintu.

Police said Mintu, who hails from Tarn Taran, bears a resemblance to one of the shooters whose images were captured on CCTV, notes IE.

“It seems to be a case of personal enmity due to his business operations, but we are also investigating the other possible theories,” said additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP)-1, Charanjit Singh. Sharma was into cable TV operations.

The police is reportedly also digging into financial dealings of the deceased.

SIT formed

DGP (Law and order) Punjab H S Dhillon visited Amritsar Tuesday and met the deceased’s family. He said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to solve the case involving DCP Investigation Jagmohan Singh, ADCP-I Charanjit Singh and ADCP-East Prabhjot Singh.

Various Hindu groups had called Amritsar Bandh (shut-down) to protest against killing of Vipin Kumar. As per media reports, the protesters had sought a meeting with minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and other MLAs in the district but Sidhu was out of the city.

“Agitated after no Congress leader appeared at the spot, they blocked the rail traffic for an hour and pelted the Jammu-Tawi Express with stones, and manhandled the driver, Ashok Kumar”, notes a report in HT.

Windowpanes of some coaches too were damaged, the report adds.

Partial Bandh in Amritsar:

Since morning, partial bandh was witnessed in the city as shops in key areas including Hall Bazaar and Ram Bagh remained closed till late evening.

In other areas, shops opened after two hours of protest. Shops inside some malls too were closed after protesters entered the premises.

Protesters raised anti-Khalistan slogans at Bharat Nagar where the killing had taken place on Monday.

Meanwhile, the dead body of the deceased was cremated in the evening on Tuesday. Earlier the Hindu groups had refused to cremate the body. They were demanding compensation and jobs for the deceased’s family members. Media reports say that the cremation was allowed only after assurance regarding fulfilment of their demands.
