Chandigarh: There are 65 items in the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 on which stamp duty is levied in the state of Punjab. Out of these 65 items the Punjab cabinet has approved a hike on 17 items. The Punjab cabinet has doubled the stamp duty on these 17 items.
The hike is likely to extract Rs. 100 crores extra from the pockets of common people of the state. The government pleads that the hike was necessary to fill the empty treasures of the state government. After cabinet’s approval the proposal is sent to the concerned department of the government for implementation.
