Chandigarh: India’s grain purchase agencies and private buyers of paddy are harassing Punjab farmers under the grab of excessive moisture in paddy. Farmer are made to wait for several days to sell their crop as the “inspectors” of purchase agencies tell them that the moisture in their crop exceeds the permissible limit. Many farmers are made to suffer a cut of several kilograms per bag due to the alleged excessive moisture in their paddy.
But farmers from Moga districts of Punjab have exposed the ‘moisture issue’ in a Facebook live video that mere changing the method of putting paddy grains in the moisture detecting machine changes the results.
In this Facebook live video, which goes viral over the social media the farmers show that the inspectors put the paddy in the test machine from certain height while scattering the grains which yields high moisture results. Then the farmers took out same grains from the machine and re-put same grains again in the machine in a consolidated way and the moisture results fell down considerably.
Farmers repeated the process multiple times on different “dheris” (heaps) of paddy and they were able to prove the fall of moisture results each time.
Farmers alleged that the purchase agencies, their inspectors and private buyers were deliberately harassing and exploiting farmers. We are being made to wait for in the grain markets for several days for selling our crop or they are imposing excessive weight cuts in order to secure more grains while paying for the less. This is sheer exploitation for farmers, they said while adding that the markers will have to get aware of the issue and struggle to step this harassment and exploitation.
