Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday (Jan. 25) said that the special investigation team (SIT) of the Punjab Police would continue to probe the cases against police officials named in FIR related to the police firing on Sikh sangat at Behbal Kalan on October 14, 2015.
Justice Rajan Gupta of the HC has passed these orders while dismissing a petition filed by former SSP Charanjit Singh and three other cops who had approached the court questioning the action against them on the basis of Justice Ranjit Singh commission which probed Behbal Kalan police firing and sacrilege incidents. The HC has also dismissed their plea seeking probe by an independent agency like CBI into four FIRs registered in connection with beadbi incidents.
The HC, however, added that the SIT shall not be influenced by the observations made by Justice Jora Singh and Justice Ranjit Singh panels about their role in the reports.
“It is expected that SIT would not be swayed by the observations of the commissions as the same are meant only to instruct the mind of the government, perhaps to prevent such unfortunate incidents in future. The SIT would conduct a fair, impartial and speedy investigation undaunted by pressure, if any, internal or external.
“It shall bear in mind that the recommendations of the commission are not adjudicatory in nature and have no binding force. The grievance in the instant case is not only of complainant but of the general public which needs to be redressed overlooking the political overtones,” Justice Rajan Gupta has added.
The grievance in the instant case is not only of complainant but of the general public which needs to be redressed overlooking the political overtones, the court observed.
