Kartarpur Sahib Corridor – Indian Govt. Identifies Land Required on East Punjab Side; Issues Notification

Chandigarh: The Indian government’s ministry of road transport and highways has reportedly identified the land it requires for the East Punjab side of the Kartarpur corridor. A media report has also said that the government has also issued notification under the National Highways Act 1956.

A report in Hindustan Times (HT) said that a transport ministry official on the condition of anonymity said: “We have already had a meeting to decide the alignment for the corridor based on which a stretch of road has been identified to be notified as national highway and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be building it. The state government now has to begin land acquisition process”.

The four villages identified for the 4.25 km stretch along Indo-Pak border dividing the Punjab into East and West Punjab in Gurdaspur district of Punjab are Chandu Nangal, Jaurian Khurd, Pakhoketahli Sahib and Dera Baba Nanak.

“A second transport ministry official said land acquisition may take longer as another final notification for the land is yet to be issued by the ministry of road transport and highways”, HT report notes.

It is notable that the Pakistani government has completed considerable portion of construction work for Kartarpur Sahib corridor on West Punjab side.
