Punjab Government Marks The Bloodstained Legacy of “Butcher of Punjab” KPS Gill; Sikhs Protest

Chandigarh: Former Punjab police chief KPS Gill was so infamous for commanding blatant human rights abuses in Punjab that he is remembered as the ‘Butcher of Punjab’ in people’s memory.

KPS Gill was the face of Indian state’s terror regime that had unleashed the region of terror on civilian Sikh population of Punjab in early to mid-1990s.

Today the Punjab government and state’s chief minister Amarinder Singh held an event to mark the bloody legacy of KPS Gill.

To ensure the ‘success’ of this event, houses of Sikh activists from across the state were raided by the police force and according to Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann) many Sikh activists were arrested by the police.

According to a written release issued by the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office, this was second memorial lecture in the ‘memory’ of KPS Gill.

Advocate Simranjit Singh maintained that more than hundred Sikhs were rounded up by the police to prevent any sort of democratic protest against holding KPS Gill event.

Grave Human Rights Abuses in 1980s-90s in Punjab:

It is now documented in various independent human rights reports that the Punjab police under the command of KPS Gill carried out grave abuse of human rights in Punjab. The police carried systematic killings of civilian Sikh population in Punjab and practised custodial torture, extra-judicial killings, fake/staged encounters, secret cremations and enforced disappearances at large scale in a systematic and organised manner.
