New Report Reveals Forest Cover of Punjab has Further Dropped; Let Us Spare Some Land For Forest

 

 

The forest cover in Punjab has decreased by 2 square kilometres in 2021 as compared to 2019. The forest cover has decreased to 1,847 square kilometres from close to 1,849 square kilometres in 2019, out of total 50,362 square kilometres geographical area in the state.

The forest cover is only 3.67% in Punjab as against 21.71% in India.

As per the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021, in Punjab, there is “Very Dense Forest” in 11 sq km, “Moderately Dense Forest” in 793 sq km while “Open Forest” is 1,043 sq km. Punjab has Reserved Forests (RF) of 44 square kilometres, Protected Forests (PF) of 1,137 sq km, unclassed 1,903 sq km and total recorded forest area 3,084 sq km which is 6.12% of geographical area.

The Agriculture and Environment Awareness Center calls upon well wishers of Punjab to spare some portion of land from their fields for nature and co-ordinate with Kaar Sewa Khadoor Sahib to plant Jhiris (small forests) on it.
