Manjinder Singh Sirsa Trying to Pay Back to BJP? Refers to Sikh Genocide 1984 as ‘Riots’ in written statement

Chandigarh: In a written statement issued today (copy available with the Sikh Siyasat News) the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) General Secretary and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) MLA from Rajouri Garden used the term “riots” to refer to the events of Sikh Genocide 1984. In Punjabi and Hindi versions of the statement Manjinder Singh Sirsa has used terms “1984 ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੰਗਾ ਪੀੜਤ” and “1984 के सिख दंगा पीडि़त” (victims of 1984 Sikh riots) to refer to the victims of Sikh Genocide 1984. In his statement Sirsa has referred to Sikh genocide 1984 for four times and each time he has used the term “riot”.

It is notable that Sikhs were subjected to genocidal violence throughout India in November 1984 and these massacres have been recognised as ‘genocide’ by various international authorities and institutions, including the Ontario Provincial Parliament in Canada.

It is pertinent to note here that the Indian government led by the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), on whose ticket Manjinder Singh Sirsa became MLA in Delhi, is opposing the official recognition of the fact of Sikh Genocide 1984 by foreign authorities. The BJP government had made huge cry against passing of Sikh Genocide 1984 resolution in the Ontario Parliament. Reports in Indian media state that Indian PM Narendra Modi had expressed his government’s discomfort and opposition over passing of Sikh Genocide 1984 resolution by the Ontario Parliament during his recent meeting with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of G20 summit.

Given the positions Manjinder Singh Sirsa is holding in Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) it is hard to believe that he was not aware of a directive issued by Akal Takht Sahib on July 14, 2014 in which the Jathedars had directed that the events of November 1984 should be referred as “Sikh Genocide 1984”. So by using term “riot” to refer to the Sikh Genocide 1984, SAD (Badal) leader cum DSGMC official has violated the directive of the Akal Takht Sahib.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa in his statement criticised Aam Aadmi Party leader H S Phoolka who had yesterday announced resign from the post of leader of opposition in Punjab assembly to pursue the cases of November 1984 Sikh victims. H S Phoolka had said that his had made the decision to resign from the post as Delhi Bar Association had refused to grant him permissions to pursue the cases as he was holding a post carrying the rank equivalent to cabinet minister.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that Phoolka’s resignation will not give a single benefit to the victims and their families. “[I]nstead Mr. Phoolka should persuade his own party Chief and Delhi Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal to start work for welfare of these families”, Manjinder Singh Sirsa said in his statement.
