Chandigarh: As per the media reports senior leader of the Punjab unit of the Aam Adami Party (AAP) and legislature from Bholath constituency Sukhpal Singh Khaira has been appointed as the leader of opposition in the Punjab legislative Assembly.
His appointment followed after senior party leader Advocate H S Phoolka resigned from the post earlier this month in order to try his luck in securing justice for 1984 Sikh genocide survivors. A meeting to choose the leader was scheduled at 4 pm at party convener Arvind Kejriwal’s residence in New Delhi.
Though there was a strong social media campaign in favour of Talwandi Sabo MLA Baljinder Kaur, the 14 MLAs, who met on July 17 in Chandigarh, decided to support Sukpal Singh Khaira for the Leader of Opposition’s post. While referring to the party sources media reports stated that Mansa MLA Nazar Mansahia, who was also a contender, has withdrawn in favour of Sukhpal Singh Khaira today.
It was further reported that the party leadership was not in favour of Sukhpal Singh Khaira but they are likely to agree with the Punjab leaders’ decision as the denial of position to the Bholath MLA may lead to division in the Punjab unit of the party, notes The Tribune (TT).
