Khushwant Singh was part of Indian state’s team deputed to deal with Sikhs after June 1984 attack, affirms CM Amarinder Singh

New Delhi:  Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday said that deceased author Khushwant Singh had played ‘defusing tensions’ in Punjab after Indian Army’s attack on Darbar Sahib and other Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab and adjoining states in June 1984.

Amarinder Singh said that “a general feeling of bitterness prevailed in the state at that time and a team was appointed to bring down tempers, with Khushwant a prominent member of it”. (quote from written statement issued by Punjab CM’s office).

Amarinder Singh was speaking during the launch of a new book on Khushwant Singh.

The statement of Punjab CM is yet another confirmation of the fact that the Indian state had used authors, journalists and intelligentsia to ideologically encircle the Sikhs after June 1984 Ghallughara.

“The Chief Minister, who was Guest of Honour at the launch of Vitasta Publishing’s new book ‘Khushwant Singh: In Wisdom and in Jest’, co-authored by Vijay Narain Shankar and Onkar Singh”, notes a statement issued by Punjab CM’s office.

Amarinder Singh also justified deceased author’s support of emergency imposed by former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In response to a question on Khushwant Singh’s decision to support the imposition of emergency and sterilisation in India, the Chief Minister said while one could agree or disagree with the methods adopted at that time, the fact is that population is a matter of serious concern and needs to be dealt with.
