AFSPA Here To Stay In Assam, Says State BJP Government

New Delhi: While Union Government dissuading itself from taking any decision regarding extending the powers under the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, the BJP government of Assam since taking over the reins of the state has here on Friday declared the entire state “disturbed” for six months beginning today.

It is said that for the first time in  the last three decade that the state government has taken such a controversial step. While quoting an official in Ministry of Home Affairs  the media reports said that the state’s home and political department today notified by declaring Assam “disturbed” area for six months, unless withdrawn earlier, as per power conferred under the AFSPA-1958.

Under the Act, the armed forces deployed in disturbed areas are empowered to arrest, search any premises and shoot anyone without any warrant, note The Tribune (TT).
