Amritsar Sahib: A rather apprehensive  over the reports about shifting of the proposed site of Baba Guru Nanak University (BGNU) from Nankana Sahib, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday sought intervention of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union foreign ministry.

It was learnt that Pakistan-based Evacuee Trust Property Board has decided to abort its original plan of setting up a university at Nankana Sahib and shift the main campus to Murid Ke in Sheikhupura district.

SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar said the sentiments of the Sikh panth would be hurt if the university was set up at a place other than the birthplace of Guru Nanak.

“It was appreciable move of the Pakistan authorities to name the university after Guru Nanak Dev Ji, but it will lose its significance if it is established at any other place. Nankana Sahib is the only apt destination for it. Sikhs, who are enthusiastic to celebrate Guru Nanak’ Dev Ji’s 550th anniversary at Nankana Sahib in 2019, will be hurt with this changed decision. I have written to the Indian PM and Union foreign ministry to approach their Pakistan counterparts,” he added, reports The Tribune (TT).
