Chandigarh: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a road authority in Indian subcontinent controlled by the Centre, has reportedly speedup the work to impose Hindi on roadside information boards in Punjab. The NHAI has placed Hindi at first place on roadside sign-boards and Punjabi is placed at third place after English.
Well-wishers of the Punjabi language, which is native language of the region of Punjab, have raised protest against forcible imposition of Hindi in the region. They handed over a memorandum to Bathinda district administration in this regard and residents of Har Raipur and Amargarh black painted many boards in protest but the administration has reportedly expressed its “helplessness” in this matter.
Punjabi put on third place on NHAI sign boards in Punjab
The NHAI is getting these sign broads fixed through a private company that has speed up the work for fixing the sign boards in wake of voices of protests.
Public Works Department (PWD) Chief Engineer A. K. Singla said that the issue was raised with the NHAI but the Central authority has refused to change the order of languages on sign boards.
