‘Pro-Freedom’ Slogans Greets Governor At Kashmir University

Srinagar:  As per the media reports Students of Kashmir University held a ‘pro-freedom’ protest during a visit of varsity chancellor and Jammu and Kashmir governor, NN Vohra here on Tuesday. Vohra visited the university to inaugurate a laboratory block and interact with the faculty of Institute of Kashmir Studies (IKS).

Eyewitnesses of the protest reportedly said that as the news of the governor’s visit spread in the campus, many students gathered near the Institute of Kashmir Studies to protest.

Furthermore, it is stated that the students were holding a banner of Kashmir University Students Union (KUSU), which has been banned by the university authorities. Some students were also holding placards which purportedly read ‘We want freedom’ and ‘We stand by resistance leadership’.

Whilst interacting with the mediapersones a protesting student said that the protest was against the “human rights violations and atrocities of Indian forces on Kashmiri people”. On his way back the governor’s cavalcade slowed down when passing near the protesting students who were shouting ‘Go India go back’.

The governor slowed down to know if there were some specific issues of the students but was informed by the university officials that the protesting students  wanted ‘Azadi’, media sources said.

The governor had come to interact with faculty members of IKS besides laying foundation stones of some new buildings inside the campus, unknown university official was quoted saying by an English vernacular.

The situation in Kashmir has been edgy with routine protests, encounters and killings since the death of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in July last year, notes Hindustan Times (HT).
